#The two halves

The pen cannot write right to the edge: 9 mm at the top and bottom of the spread is the machine's grip zone. That leaves a writable band 122 mm tall, and the message box itself is 88 mm wide, with 10 mm of margin each side of the right-hand panel so the handwriting does not start hard against the fold.

#Where to write your message

Choose your front artwork in the card picker, then use the message and Sign-off fields in your send, campaign, or automation. You can choose the handwriting there too. Campaigns and automations can use merge fields to personalize the text for each recipient.

Older saved designs may still contain inside text from the previous editor. That text is preserved when those designs are used. Duplicating a design copies its front artwork only; existing designs and orders keep their saved content.

#How much message fits

The message composer checks your words against the space on the card and adjusts the handwriting to fit. A short note keeps a natural writing size and leaves some paper blank. If the message still overflows at the smallest supported size, you need to shorten it. The millimeter readout describes the lowercase body; capitals and long strokes are taller. The hard limit is 500 characters, everywhere: the campaign composer and the automation form stop you typing past it, and the API rejects anything longer with message_too_long. In practice a comfortable card is 250 to 400 characters — 500 is the ceiling, not a target, and merge fields only ever make a message longer.
